Philippines Wins Texas Instruments Plant
HONG KONG -
The Philippines has beaten China in the contest for a $1 billion semiconductor test and assembly plant planned by Texas Instruments.
The factory, which will be built in a special economic zone on the site of the former Clark U.S. Air Force base, will be among the most environmentally friendly in the world, the company said, incorporating many environmental and energy-saving features first used by TI in the United States at its newest semiconductor facility.
Texas Instruments (nyse: TXN - news - people ), the world’s third-largest semiconductor maker and the largest supplier of chips for mobile phones, said the new plant would double its existing capacity in the Philippines and eventually employ 3,000 workers on an 800,000-square-foot factory floor.
Great news for the Philippines. Now if we can just create our own semiconductors. :)
